The run continues

VfB have moved on to five consecutive Bundesliga games without a defeat and celebrated a perfect point yield since the re-start. On Saturday evening, the side with the infamous red hoop on their shirts earned themselves a 2-1 (0-0) win over Hamburger SV.  On the day, the Cannstatt Boys were the better team, but it took until very late ion, before two substitutes combined to net the relieving winner.

Personnel

Jürgen Kramny stuck with his successful starting eleven from the game in Cologne. Toni Sunjic returned to the squad following his recent suspension. Hamburg coach Bruno Labbadia also sent out the same eleven that began in their first game of the year.

Highlights

45th minute: In spite of having completely dominated the first half and creating a number of chances on goal, Christian Gentner & Co. went in at the break locked in stalemate with HSV.

Statement

Daniel Didavi: "We played really well on a difficult surface. The equaliser was a bitter setback, which made things very tight once again. The fact that we then managed the win is a very positive factor. We have now closed right in on the teams above us, but just because of these two wins, we are not about to start dreaming. We are ambitious enough to want to continue climbing in the table though."

Post-match comments

66th minute: And after back-to-back corners, VfB finally break the deadlock! From a Filip Kostic delivery, Daniel Didavi heads on goal, with René Adler and Aron Hunt combining to turn the ball over their own goal-line. The HSV midfielder did all in his power to make a clearance, but the ball was clearly over the line.

75th minute: Bewilderment amongst the VfB supporters. With their first chance of the second half, HSV level the scores, as Artjoms Rudnevs launches himself at the ball to net a flying header.

79th minute: Przemyslaw Tyton rescues his side from going behind. The Polish keeper gets a foot out to turn a Ivo Ilicevic effort around the post.

80th minute: At the opposite end, substitute Artem Kravets’ effort from distance is denied by René Adler.

88th minute: The new man celebrates! From a cross by fellow substitute Alexandru Maxim, Artem Kravets rises to head home and make it 2-1 on his home debut.

90th minute: In the dying second, Przemyslaw Tyton saves again to secure the points for VfB.

Summary

VfB leave the field of play in their first home game of the year as deserved winners. Over the complete ninety minutes, the Cannstatt Boys were the more active of the two sides and controlled proceedings. On the day, the route to the three points need not have been so nail-biting. Alone in the first half, VfB created a number of chances on goal, but the openings were left painfully untaken. Yet more frustrating was that HSV then managed to equalise VfB’s opener with their first chance on goal in the second half. The fact that Christian Gentner & Co. then struck again to take all three points speaks volumes about the will and moral within the side.
