VfB fight back
On Saturday, VfB earned themselves a share of the spoils away to FC Ingolstadt 04. At the end of the ninety minutes against the ‘Schanzer’, Jürgen Kramny’s men played out a 3-3 (1-1) draw. In spite of twice going behind (0-1; 1-3), Stuttgart hit back with a strong finish to level the scores.
Personnel
Jürgen Kramny stuck with the bulk of his successful starting eleven from last weekend’s home win over Hoffenheim. The VfB coach opted to make just one change, starting with Timo Werner in place of Artem Kravets up front.
Highlights
4th minute: VfB make a poor start away to the Bundesliga new-boys. A poorly played pass caught out the Cannstatt Boys in their own half, with Ingolstadt’s Moritz Hartmann latching on to the ball and hammering home to put his side in front.
9th minute: VfB make use of the next opportunity in the game to level the scores. Emiliano Insua wins possession and sets up a counter-attack, passing out left to Filip Kostic. The midfielder has enough space to make use of his pace and dives home his fifth goal of the season to make it 1-1.
Statement
Jürgen Kramny: "That was a really intensive game from the very first minute."
Post-match comments
56th minute: A set-back for the side with the shirts with the infamous red hoop early in the second half. A free-kick from the left finds the unmarked Mathew Leckie, who heads home to make it 2-1 for the hosts.
61st minute: And the new-boys extend their advantage further still, with Dario Lezcano directly converting a free-kick to make it 3-1 for FCI.
79th minute: The Cannstatt Boys are back in the tie. From a floated free-kick, substitute Boris Tashchy heads square for Lukas Rupp to reduce the deficit – 2-3.
83rd minute: The VfB fans are out of their seats and celebrating their third goal, with Daniel Didavi comfortably slotting home from the penalty spot after Filip Kostic had been felled in the area.
Summary
VfB displayed some real moral in their clash with FC Ingolstadt. Having quickly equalised after going 0-1 down in the first half, during the second period, things looked decidedly gloomy for Jürgen Kramny’s side. Conceding the 1-2 and then 1-3, the Cannstatt Boys initially failed to find a way forward, but Lukas Rupp & Co. refused to throw in the towel and battled back to level the scores. It was yet another well-earned point for VfB in the race to secure their place in the top-flight.
