Thanks to a massively energetic performance, VfB have started the 2016/2017 season with a victory. In front of crowd of 60,000 at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, coach Jos Luhukay’s side beat FC St. Pauli 2-1. Trailing 0-1 at the break, the Cannstatt Boys made a notable improvement in the second period, first deservedly equalising and then netting a winner shortly before the end. Two hours before kick-off, thousands of VfB fans marched to the Arena in the Cannstatt Procession.
28th minute | The visitors from Hamburg take the lead, although VfB had looked solid at the back until the point of conceding. Breaking down the right, Fafà Picault delivers a cross from the by-line to find striker Aziz Bouhaddouz lunging in at the back post to put the north German club in front. |
37th minute | Similarly to the incident which led to the first goal, VfB cause themselves problems with poor and imprecise passing to allow the guests another chance. Luckily on this occasion for Jos Luhukay’s men, the slightly deflected shot from Aziz Bouhaddouz hit the inside of the post, bounced along the line and away for a corner at the opposite side of the goal-frame. |
60th minute | So close! Stephen Sama rises highest to meet a corner with a powerful header, but sees his effort bounce away off the crossbar. |
67th minute | Now it’s really end-to-end stuff! Mitch Langerak prevents a further setback, making a save from a bobbling Christopher Buchtmann shot. On the break, Gentner sends a pass out wide to Alexandru Maxim, who bursts into the penalty area and precisely slots his shot home for a well-deserved and much celebrated equaliser. |
87th minute | Following the equaliser, VfB worked extremely hard in attempting to turn the tie in the favour and are eventually rewarded for their immense efforts shortly before the final whistle. Christian Gentner slides in to meet a shot from Emiliano Insua and turns the ball unstoppably past Robin Himmelmann to make it 2-1. |
90th minute +1 | Alexandru Maxim forces another save from the FC St. Pauli keeper in injury time and soon after, the Cannstatt Boys celebrate a hard-fought out, but no less deserved win. |
Jos Luhukay:
We saw two sides to my team during this game – similarly to during the test match against Greuther Fürth, when we turned a 0-1 deficit into a 3-1 success. Initially, we didn’t deal with the pressure and made life difficult for ourselves. The goal we conceded resulted from our error. St. Pauli put in a very solid and well-organised performance. On the night though, my team rose to the mentality and determination needed in the ‚2. Bundesliga‘. Although the win was somewhat fortunate, I am very happy about the determination of the players, who proved themselves in front of a stunning crowd. The fans were always completely behind the team.
Summary
VfB went about the game with the right attitude – which coach Jos Luhukay’s men proved over the course of the first ninety minutes in the 2016/2017 season. Not everything went immediately according to plan in a newly formed team, but Christian Gentner & Co. battled their way into the tie and hit back particularly well, having suffered the setback of going behind in the first half. The Cannstatt Boys continued to press forward, forced a defensively minded opponent back deep into their own half and created a number of good chances. The then deserved equaliser by Alexandru Maxim was followed up with an equally well-earned Christian Gentner winner.
