A crowd of 55,160 spectators packed into the Mercedes-Benz Arena saw VfB notch up a 3-1 (1-0) win over Arminia Bielefeld. Christian Gentner & Co. were the more active team and, similarly to recent games, again took an early lead. The intermittent equaliser did little to unsettle the side in the shirts with the infamous red hoop, who duly hit back with goals number two and three. All three VfB goals on the day were scored by Simon Terodde, who took his personal goal-tally for the season to seven.
Personnel
In VfB’s starting eleven, Simon Terodde was brought in to replace Toni Sunjic as the only alteration made by head-coach Hannes Wolf in comparison with the side that began in last weekend’s derby victory in Karlsruhe.
13th minute | Simon Terodde makes it 1-0 for VfB. The Wasenelf’s number nine pounces following a back-pass, putting pressure on Bielefeld’s keeper Wolfgang Hesl, getting to the ball before the keeper can make a pass and the ball duly bounced in off Simon Terodde’s foot. |
44th minute | Shortly before the half-time break, Kevin Großkreutz receives his fifth booking of the season, which means the winger is suspended for the up-coming game against 1. FC Union Berlin on November 20th. The hosts take their narrow advantage into the break. |
64th minute | An equaliser for the visitors, with Andreas Voglsammer making it 1-1. |
67th minute | And Bielefeld almost take the lead. A shot from Tom Schütz strikes the post and, luckily for VfB, Fabian Klos is unable to turn the rebound home. And Bielefeld almost take the lead. A shot from Tom Schütz strikes the post and, luckily for VfB, Fabian Klos is unable to turn the rebound home. |
70th minute | Simon Terodde is then ultimately more precise in his finishing. From an Emiliano Insua cross, VfB’s centre-forward heads home to put his side back in the driving seat. |
90th minute | Further reason for Simon Terodde celebrations in the final minute. The number nine fires home directly from a Carlos Mané delivery to make the final score 3-1. |
Simon Terodde:
Bielefeld came here confidently, following back-to-back wins and they immediately made life difficult for us. Following the equaliser, we showed just the right reaction and created a number of chances. The 1-0 was an important goal at just the right time, even if such goals are accompanied by an amount of fortune. For the second goal, the combination play with Emiliano worked very well. During the week he was forced out twice, but I told him that he really had to play. The fact that I scored from a cross again today is perfect. We are delighted about this win in front of a great crowd.
Summed-up
VfB’s third consecutive win was a tough afternoon’s work. The Cannstatt Boys were the more active of the two sides over long phases of the match against a tightly packed and defensively minded opponent. Bielefeld’s defensive order made it difficult for the hosts to put attacking moves together, as the visitors themselves often looked threatening on the break. Following the equaliser, Christian Gentner & Co. displayed exactly the right attitude and duly deservedly decided the game in their favour. It was VfB’s fourth consecutive home win.
