The fifth consecutive game without a defeat (four wins, one draw), five consecutive home victories and the third Monday evening win this season – the 3-1 success over 1. FC Nürnberg saw VfB extend their positive run further still. And that not least thanks to striker Simon Terodde, who snagged a brace to put the Wasenelf on their way. In added time, Takuma Asano got in on the scoring too, to make the final result 3-1.
Personnel
Hannes Wolf made two changes to his starting eleven from last weekend’s draw away to 1. Union Berlin. With Alexandru Maxim and Takuma Asano in from the outset in place of Berkay Özcan and Florian Klein, who both took places on the substitute’s bench. Both Hajime Hosogai, returning from a broken toe, and Kevin Großkreutz, who sat out a suspension for his fifth booking of the campaign, were back in the squad.
3rd minute | VfB begin just as they had in the last four games – with a goal in the first quarter-hour. Just as in their last outing, striker Simon Terodde puts the hosts in front after just three minutes. Carlos Mané slices an excellent pass through the FCN defence for Takuma Asano, who selflessly lays square for Simon Terodde to slide in and make it 1-0. It’s VfB’s seventh goal in the opening quarter-hour of games this season. |
28th minute | Fortune favours the hosts. Nuremberg’s Tobias Kempe fires in a powerful drive from 25 meters out, which pounds off the inside of the posts and bounces back into play. |
33rd minute | At the other end, the Wasenelf pounce again. Matthias Zimmermann gets the move going with a throw in on the right, finding Carlos Mané, who breaks to the by-line before cutting a pass back into the path of Simon Terodde. The striker makes no mistakes and drives the ball home to make it 2-0. It’s the front-man’s tenth goal of the season and his sixth in succession for the side in the shirts with the infamous red hoop. |
45th minute | Half-time in the Mercedes-Benz Arena: VfB controlled much of the first-half and managed to add an all-important second goal. Shortly before the 2-0, the hosts were lucky not to concede, when the only clear attempt on goal by FCN saw the ball clatter away off the inside of the post. |
73rd minute | Once again the width of the aluminium comes to VfB’s rescue, with a header by substitute Cedric Teuchert heading against the post. |
80th minute | Now the tension is increasing - Kevin Möhwald is on target to make it 1-2. |
86th minute | Hajime Hosogai makes his comeback, having missed out in recent weeks with a broken toe. |
90th minute | The decider! Takuma Asano gets on the end of a pass from Mané to make it 3-1. And it’s all over! |
Simon Terodde:
I really have to compliment the whole team tonight. In the first-half we played a lot of poor passes and we looked to prevent that from happening after the break, which led to us creating more chances on goal. We rewarded ourselves in the end for a determined team effort.
Summed-up
They were three a well-earned points for VfB. The Cannstatt Boys set out an attacking stall, were committed and controlled long phases of the game. Coach Hannes Wolf’s men allowed very little through and, particularly in the first-half, proved extremely effective with the use of their chances. In the second period, the hosts missed out on the opportunity to kill the tie with a third goal early on, boosting Nuremberg’s self-belief when the visitors reduced the deficit and making for some unnecessarily tense moments before the end.
