On Sunday, VfB were left frustrated and dejected by a defensively strong and attackingly effective FC Würzburger Kickers side. On the day, coach Hannes Wolf’s men floundered to a 0-3 (0-2) defeat in the Franken region. In spite of their best efforts, the Wasenelf were unable to carve a way through to the opposition goal.
Personnel
Hannes Wolf made three alterations to his starting eleven from last weekend. The suspended Timo Baumgartl (red card) was replaced at the centre of defence by Toni Sunjic. Club captain Christian Gentner had been ill over the past few days and initially took a place on the bench alongside Matthias Zimmermann. In midfield, Alexandru Maxim and Hajime Hosogai got the nod from the outset, with Simon Terodde leading out the team as captain. Having recovered from injury, Tobias Werner was back in the squad fort he first time.
27th minute | That’s extremely frustrating – VfB are suddenly a goal down! Elia Soriano launches an attack for the hosts down the right and passes to Rico Benatelli. The defensive block around Mitch Langerak are unable to clear their lines and the keeper is forced to make a stop from Valdet Rama. The effort initially bounces away off the post, but Rico Benatelli reacts quickest to poke the ball over the line and make it 1-0 for the hosts. VfB had been the more active of the two sides until that point, but were unable to turn their superiority into chances on goal. |
29th minute | At the other end, Simon Terodde gets on the end of a delivery from Emiliano Insua, but the headed effort sails over the crossbar. |
36th minute | The opening goal has inspired the hosts, who create their next opening through Elia Soriano. From a corner, Takuma Asano is luckily perfectly positioned on the goal-line to clear the Würzburger man’s header. |
40th minute | Würzburger make it 2-0 going into the break. Latching on to a corner from Nejmeddin Daghfous, Clemens Schoppenhauer jabs home amidst the confusion in the area. |
68th minute | First Simon Terodde and then Christian Gentner have openings in the penalty area, but in both cases, Würzburg defenders were quicker to the ball. |
80th minute: | The hosts increase their cushion to three goals on a well-executed counter-attack. The goal-scorer is Nejmeddin Daghfous. It’s the final telling action of the afternoon, as the final ten minutes are played out with little incident. |
Hannes Wolf:
That was a poor performance from us today. That dependency to give our all in every moment of the game is something I missed and we were second to Würzburg in evcery area of the pitch. They were simply better and quicker. We had to make a number of personnel alterations for the game, but that doesn’t explain our lack of activity. There is no painting this more attractively than it was. We will discuss the deficits and take them into the winter break as tasks to be worked on.
Summed-up
The final week ahead of the winter break has proven a disappointing one for VfB. Following last Monday night’s home defeat to Hannover 96, the Cannstatt Boys slumped in their final match of the year away to FC Würzburger Kickers. Hannes Wolf’s eleven threw what they could into attack, but lacked the ideas in the decisive moments in looking to break down the Kickers defence. The hosts on the other hand made impressively effective use of the chances that came their way.
