On Sunday at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, VfB extended their run of consecutive victories with a 2-0 win over 1. FC Kaiserslautern. The opening goal again saw Emiliano Insua and Simon Terodde combine to make it 1-0 for VfB, just as they did when the sides clashed earlier in the season. In the closing phase, Hannes Wolf’s side extended their advantage with their seventh substitute’s goal of the campaign. On the day, the side in the shirts with the infamous red hoop had to display patience and discipline, generating more tempo in the second period and eventually breaking down their opponents to claim all three points.
Personnel
Having set out his stall with the same starting eleven in the last three matches, Hannes Wolf was forced to make do without the services of right full-back Kevin Großkreutz for the clash with the 'Red Devils'. The 28-year-old, currently suffering with a foot injury was replaced by former Lautern player Jean Zimmer. The coach also made a second change, with the winning goal-scorer against 1. FC Heidenheim Josip Brekalo getting the nod ahead of Julian Green from the outset. It was the Croatian’s starting eleven debut. In addition, Ebenezer Ofori was in the VfB squad fort he first time for a competitive match.
26th minute | The best chance on goal thus far: Kaiserslautern‘s Sebastian Kerk fires a free-kick from 30 meters out towards the VfB goal, but luckily for the hosts, the ball curls away from the upright and spins wide of the mark. |
30th minute | The Cannstatt Boys make use of winning possession to break forward with tempo and attack the opposition goal. Josip Brekalo’s subsequent shot is fired wide of the target. |
45th minute | The sides go into the half-time break locked in stalemate. Both teams have proven sharp and alert at the back throughout, whilst on the attack, neither has looked threatening enough. |
58th minute | VfB take the lead! Emiliano Insua battles through on the left and crosses to the centre, where Simon Terodde cuts in ahead of his marker to toe-poke the ball past FCK keeper Julian Pollersbeck. It is a thoroughly deserved lead for the hosts at this stage of the game, VfB have displayed more pace and determination since the re-start. |
88th minute | VfB make it 2-0. Berkay Özcan makes use of some good build-up work by Daniel Ginczek to double the home side’s advantage. Soon after, the final whistle is blown and the Wasenelf celebrate yet another deserved win with their euphoric fans. |
Daniel Ginczek:
Compliments to the fans for their support here today. A crowd of 52,000 is not self-evident in the '2. Bundesliga'. We looked to pay some of that fate in us back on the pitch, which we achieved in securing our fifth consecutive win. We played the game well and took the lead at just the right time. Of course I would have liked to get in on the scoring, but in the end, Berkay made it 2-0 and we took all three points. That was our target.
Summed-up
It was anything but an easy afternoon’s work for VfB’s attacking players, made clear not only by the fact that striker Simon Terodde had to have treatment on his nose in the first-half, but also as the Cannstatt Boys had very few opportunities on goal in the first 45 minutes. This was undoubtedly down to an opponent, who proved at the Mercedes-Benz Arena just why they boast the best defensive record in the '2. Bundesliga' this season. Christian Gentner & Co. displayed patience and discipline over the course of the ninety minutes, eventually being rewarded with Simon Terodde’s opener. In the closing phase, VfB stood solid at the back and again made their quality count on the attack, to secure a well-earned victory.
