The prerequisites for a super Sunday were perfect: Sunshine, temperatures around the 20°C mark and the Arena packed to capacity, for the sixth time this season, with 60,000 fans. The spectators saw a dominant VfB display against Würzburger Kickers, which ended in a 4-1 victory and the Stuttgart club’s immediate return to the Bundesliga as second-flight champions. At the final whistle, there was no stopping the celebrations in the Mercedes-Benz Arena.
11th minute | VfB are the more active of the two sides right from the outset, as they are driven forward by the ecstatic fans. The first clear chance of the game falls then however to the visitors. Caught on a quick break, VfB are spared a deficit by Mitch Langerak, who first saves from Peter Kurzweg and then blocks the follow-up from Nejmeddin Daghfous. |
32nd minute | Winning possession in midfield, Matthias Zimmermann gets forward and fires VfB into the lead from distance. It’s the first goal of the ‘2. Bundesliga‘ season for VfB‘s number 25. The bulk of the 60,000 in the Mercedes-Benz Arena and tens of thousands on the Cannstatter Wasen erupt in celebration. |
59th minute | VfB break to make it 2-0: Winning a challenge on the edge of his own box, Timo Baumgartl sprays the ball to Marcin Kaminski, who sends Daniel Ginczek on his way towards the opposition goal. Bursting forward, the 26-year-old lays square for Simon Terodde to net his 24th goal of the season for VfB. |
64th minute | Florian Klein replaces Josip Brekalo. After three years at the club, it’s the Austrian’s final appearance in the shirt with the infamous red hoop. |
74th minute | Daniel Ginczek almost adds a third, but the striker’s shot proves too imprecise and Würzburg keeper Jörg Siebenhandl is equal to the effort. |
78th minute | Würzburg reduce the deficit. Tobias Schröck makes it 1-2. |
80th minute | VfB hit back with an immediate response: Once again, Timo Baumgartl wins the ball and plays to Daniel Ginczek, who again provides the assist for Simon Terodde. |
89th minute | The final goal of the season for VfB: Daniel Ginczek fires home from 20 meters out to make the final score 4-1. At 17:16 CET, referee Patrick Ittrich blows the final whistle and the party can begin. VfB are back in top-flight football. |
Hannes Wolf:
I would like to thank everyone who has put us where we are now. I have been exposed to a great deal of respect. The fans were always right behind us. It’s a privilege for me to be a part of this.
Summed up
The conditions were delightful – as was the VfB performance on the pitch! Coach Hannes Wolf’s men were the clearly dominant side over the course of the ninety minutes at the Mercedes-Benz Arena. Driven on by the incredible Stuttgart crowd, the Cannstatt Boys secured a 4-1 win and the three points which sealed the ‘2. Bundesliga’ championship title. The team thus rewarded themselves for a season which posed some difficult situations and, in doing so, thanked the fans for their amazing backing throughout with a good performance on the closing day of the campaign.
