It was a warm summer’s evening, in front of a crowd of 52,200 in the Mercedes-Benz Arena on VfB’s 123rd birthday – the perfect prerequisites for a successful birthday for VfB. On the night though, 1. FC Heidenheim were to prove the ultimate party-poopers. In a second half which saw three goals scored in quick succession, the Cannstatt Boys were left licking the wounds opened up by a 1-2 defeat.
Personnel
Jos Luhukay opted to stick with the same eleven that began in the 2-1 win over SV Sandhausen before the international break. New signing Takuma Asano was in the squad for the first time and Kevin Großkreutz was back from injury to take a place in the 18-man selection.
5th minute | VfB make a good start to the game on the club’s 123rd birthday. Having successfully broken up an attempt to build an attack by the visitors and gaining possession, the Cannstatt Boys break away. Christian Gentner lays a pass off to Jean Zimmer, who lets fly from eleven meters out, but drives his effort over the bar. |
62nd minute | The Cannstatt Boys put the pressure on in the early phase of the second half, with Jos Luhukay adding to his sides attacking options by bringing in substitute Alexandru Maxim. |
69th minute | Heidenheim take the lead. Marc Schnatterer delivers a cross from the right for John Verhoek, who heads home to make it 1-0. |
72nd minute | An immediate answer from VfB! A corner delivered from the left is met by the head of Toni Sunjic, who finds the net to equalise for the hosts – 1-1. |
75th minute | Kevin Großkreutz comes on to replace Tobias Werner. |
76th minute | It’s end-to-end action now. On a quick counter-atttack, Heidenheim strike to a 2-1 lead, with the goal being scored by recently introduced substitute Tim Skarke. |
88th minute | What a double-chance! Heidenheim keeper initially saves a header and then the resulting follow-up shot from Toni Sunjic. There is to be no way back for VfB, who lose the game to Heidenheim 1-2. |
Jos Luhukay:
We are very disappointed! We looked shaky form the very first to the very last minute. We lost an unbelievable amount of possession – often without even really being under pressure. The defeat is made all the worse for us because, once again, we got to play in front of a fantastic crowd. We are in a process of development right now and we must learn from such games as quickly as possible. WE need to bounce back now as a team and be more courageous in our determination to offer the fans something – especially in home games!
Summary
It was a birthday to forget for VfB. Coach Jos Luhukay’s side did react well to going 0-1 down and hit back quickly with an equaliser, but the Cannstatt Boys were unable to maintain parry for long and quickly found themselves 1-2 down. It was a burden which proved too heavy for the hosts to bear in the end.
