Home winning streak goes on

The Mercedes-Benz Arena was packed with 46,924 fans, who witnessed the lads from Cannstatt make it six wins in a row at home as they outclassed Regensburg 2-0. Before the match began, the two teams and their supporters observed a minute’s silence for the victims of the attacks in Hanau, and both the VfB and SSV players wore black armbands.

Personnel

The only change to the starting line-up from the team which beat VfL Bochum 1-0 away on Monday was the return of Hamadi Al Ghaddioui in place of Mario Gomez - who was on the bench this time around - giving the German striker of Moroccan parentage another chance to face the club he played for until last summer. When the two teams met on Matchday 6, the 29-year-old came on as a substitute and scored to make it 3-1 in what was eventually a 3-2 away win for VfB.

Highlights
4th minute VfB’s Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel is called upon almost straight away to claw a header from Marco Grüttner away for a corner.
50th minute Nervy moments in the VfB ranks just after the second half gets under way. Kobel is impeded by Grüttner as he attempts – unsuccessfully – to catch a cross in the six-yard box and ends up behind the goal line as he clears the ball. Referee Harm Osmers awards the visitors a goal before consulting with his assistant and checking video footage and ruling it out.
58th minute What a blinder! Daniel Didavi steps up to take a free-kick just over 20 yards from goal and fires a bullet past Regensburg goalkeeper Alexander Meyer into the top left-hand corner.
59th minute VfB double their lead mere moments later. Silas Wamangituka centres from the left for Gonzalo Castro, who celebrates his 50th appearance for Stuttgart by notching his first and VfB’s 40th goal of the season to make it 2-0.
90th minute The home team press forward right up until the final whistle and continue to create chances, but cannot quite add to their final tally, even with an extra three minutes added on at the end. Nevertheless, they can celebrate a well-earned 2-0 victory.

Daniel Didavi:

It was a good display from us. Up front things just keep getting better, but the final pass still goes astray quite often. When we find ourselves in front of goal, we don’t take enough of our chances, so if there’s anything to be unhappy about, it’s that we didn’t score enough goals. The longer it remains 0-0, the tougher it gets, so it was all the more important that we scored the two goals as quickly as we did and at the end of the day, we got the win that we deserved.

Summary

Another home win for VfB, and it was no less than they deserved against Regensburg. Pellegrino Matarazzo’s men dominated for the full 90 minutes, and with Hamburger SV slipping to defeat today, they are now up to second in the table.
