VfB held in top-of-the-table clash

Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side took the lead in a hard-fought encounter with league leaders Arminia Bielefeld but ultimately had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Personnel:

Matarazzo made three changes to the VfB side that lost 2-0 at Greuther Fürth in their last league match, with Holger Badstuber, Nicolas Gonzalez and Mario Gomez replacing Atakan Karazor, Roberto Massimo and Hamadi Al Ghaddioui in the starting line-up.

Highlights
36th minute Both sides struggle to fashion clear-cut opportunities in a first half dominated by two well-drilled defences. As a result, there was no separating the two teams at the interval.
53rd minute VfB take the lead! A flowing move involving several players results in Gonzalez delivering a pin-point left-wing cross into the penalty area, where Gomez rises unmarked to head home the opener.
62nd minute VfB attack down the right-hand side. Silas Wamangituka swings in a ball towards Gonzalez, who shoots first time from 15 metres but sends his powerful effort wide of the target.
76th minute The visitors restore parity. Bielefeld defender Cedric Brunner hurls a long throw into the VfB penalty area, where Fabian Klos manages to flick the ball on to Cebio Soukou. The midfielder takes a touch before firing into the net on the turn from ten metres.
86th minute A Gonzalo Castro corner leads to a spot of pin-ball inside the Bielefeld penalty area. Several VfB players attempt to turn Badstuber’s flick-on past Arminia goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, but the visitors manage to throw bodies in the way before clearing the danger.

Pascal Stenzel:

After taking the lead, we relinquished our dominance on the game and became too passive. Nobody would have complained if a foul had been awarded before the equaliser, but I can understand why it wasn’t given. We need to take the point and keep going. A draw isn’t the end of the world. There are still nine games to go. We need to focus on ourselves.

Summary:

A 1-1 draw was a fair reflection of Monday evening’s game. Although both teams could have snatched a crucial second goal, goalscoring chances were at a premium on an evening where two organised rearguards came out on top. Gomez headed VfB in front following a neat move, but Bielefeld’s late pressure finally told 14 minutes from time.
