As the final whistle finally blew at the end of the ninety minutes, plus some additional time, coach Hannes Wolf’s men gathered to celebrate their 1-0 victory over 1. FSV Mainz 05 with the fans in the Cannstatter Kurve. Just meters away, the bulk of the 53,150 strong crowd bellowed a chorus of "Der VfB ist wieder da" (VfB are back!). The Wasenelf had secured their first win since returning to the elite in German football. The victory for the Cannstatt Boys was the result of some very convincing defending and a wonderful combination between two new-signings.
Personnel
For VfB, Timo Baumgartl returned to the starting eleven, with the 21-year-old replacing Matthias Zimmermann on the right side of the back-four. In addition, coach Hannes Wolf made two further alterations to the side that began in Berlin. Holger Badstuber and Dennis Aogo started for VfB for the first time, forcing Ailton and Takuma Asano onto the bench.
11th minute | In an evenly matched opening phase, VfB have the first sight of goal. Chadrac Akolo wins possession on the half-way line and presses forward before laying-off for Dennis Aogo, but the new-man fires his shot the wrong side of the post. Shortly after, Simon Terodde returned to the field of play, having spent three minutes on the side-lines having a cut above his left eye treated, which he picked up in an aerial challenge. |
28th minute | VfB had initially shut-out their opponents convincingly, but now the guests have their first attempt from a set-piece. Alexandru Maxim delivers a free-kick into the VfB area, where Stefan Bell gets a header in, but Ron-Robert Zieler is equal to the effort with a strong save. |
53rd minute | A perfect combination between the two new-signings Dennis Aogo and Holger Badstuber puts VfB in the lead: From a corner delivered by Dennis Aogo, Holger Badstuber powers through and flings himself in to head home from six meters out. |
80th minute | Simon Terodde fails to put the tie to bed from the penalty-spot, as he fires against the foot of the post. The striker had previously burst into the box at pace before being felled by a combination of Mainz keeper René Adler and defender Giulio Donati. Referee Benjamin Brand only awarded the spot-kick following confirmation from the video-referee. |
90’+2 minute | The last chance of the game is a close call. A loose ball falls to Mainz‘s Yoshinori Muto, who let’s fly with a volley from 16 meters out. Once again it’s an excellent save from Ron-Robert Zieler that frustrates he visitors. |
Holger Badstuber:
Today was the perfect start in front of our home fans and the atmosphere was incredible.
Summed-up
VfB can thank above all a convincing defensive display for their deserved home victory, with the back-line almost impeachable. On the odd occasion that Mainz did find a way through on goal, goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler was on hand to avert the danger. On the offensive, the hosts displayed some positive approach play, but the final pass was often too imprecise. Symptomatic indeed that a set-piece would make the difference on the day. A perfectly executed corner combination between Dennis Aogo and Holger Badstuber put the Cannstatt Boys on the road to victory.
