In front of 51,881 spectators at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, VfB were beaten 3-2 by Mainz on Saturday. The visitors went two goals to the good in the first half and added a third midway through the second period. Stuttgart fought back by scoring twice in the closing stages – and had opportunities for an equaliser – but ultimately were left empty-handed.
Personnel
January arrivals Alexander Esswein and Steven Zuber made their VfB debuts, but Ozan Kabak, who only completed his transfer to VfB on Thursday, was not in the 18-man matchday squad.
22nd minute | After an even start, with neither side able to fashion any real chances, the visitors take the lead. Jean-Paul Boetius's shot from the edge of the box is deflected, giving Ron-Robert Zieler no chance in the VfB goal. |
28th minute | It gets worse for the hosts as Jean-Philippe Mateta doubles the Mainz lead. |
72nd minute | Alexander Hack makes it 3-0 to the visitors following a corner. |
83rd minute | Nicolás Gonzalez reduces the deficit with a header from Christian Gentner's cross, the Argentinian's second goal of the season making it 3-1. |
85th minute | A second goal for VfB – this one another header – ratchets up the tension in the Mercedes-Benz Arena. Marc Oliver Kempf makes it 3-2 as the home side launch a late rally. |
86th minute | This is a crazy ending. Anastasios Donis hits the post, before VAR is called into action to decide whether a penalty should be awarded to VfB. In the end, referee Tobias Stieler awards a corner. |
94th minute | Stuttgart throw everything at Mainz in the closing stages and create a couple of half-chances, but it is not to be. Ron-Robert Zieler produces a save at the other end but after four minutes of added time, it remains 3-2 to the visitors. |
Markus Weinzierl :
Today panned out as it did because we gave too much away at the back – their goals were too easy – and scored our goals too late at the other end
Summary
The comeback ultimately came too late. VfB gave everything in the closing stages, but Mainz's two early goals proved too high a mountain to climb. The hosts did battle back late on, but for long periods there was a lack of penetration and Mainz's third goal gave the visitors an unassailable advantage.
