Hard-fought point

VfB and Bremen shared the spoils at the Weser-Stadion on Friday night in front of over 40,000 spectators, including around 2,000 Stuttgart fans. It was a courageous display from Markus Weinzierl’s side, who took the lead inside two minutes. The hosts levelled shortly before the break, but VfB dug in during the second half to hold onto a valuable point.

Personnel

Weinzierl kept faith with the players who started at home to RB Leipzig last weekend as he named an unchanged starting line-up for the team's third away match of 2019.

Highlights
2nd minute What a start for VfB! Mario Gomez’s headed flick-on opens up a gap for Steven Zuber, and the Swiss winger runs into the free space and opens the scoring after just 61 seconds. It’s his second goal on the bounce after netting a penalty against Leipzig.
9th minute A great chance for the team in red and white to extend their lead. Gomez races through the high Werder backline and into the penalty area, but the striker is forced to shoot from a tight angle and his effort is blocked for a corner.
44th minute Young defender Ozan Kabak wins the ball, ventures forward and plays in Gomez, who’s denied by Bremen goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka this time.
45th minute Instead of being 2-0 to VfB it’s 1-1 moments later as Davy Klaassen fires in the equaliser from just outside the penalty area.
79th minute VfB keeper Ron-Robert Zieler makes an excellent save at full stretch to palm away Theodor Gebre Selassie’s header from a corner.
90th minute After four minutes of stoppage time, the full time whistle goes and VfB take a point back home.

Markus Weinzierl:

We’ll take confidence from this game. It was a strong team performance.

Summary

VfB deserved the point after another brave and committed performance. Weinzierl’s men had the better chances in the first half and could have gone 2-0 up before conceding the equaliser on the stroke of half-time. The hosts pushed for a winner in the second period but Zieler and Co. stood firm.
