“Everyone pushed themselves to the limit”

The VfB camp were left frustrated after conceding a late equaliser, but took heart from the fact they went close to inflicting a first defeat of the season on the Bundesliga champions.

Sebastian Hoeneß, VfB head coach: “So soon after the final whistle, my overriding feeling is that we didn’t get what we deserved today. We would have deserved to win. Overall, it was a very good game of football with good performances from the players. We played incredibly well, especially in the second half, and had some good chances to score a third goal. Leverkusen got back into the game during a period when they were essentially done and dusted. They went on to have dangerous chances of their own. Before their equaliser, I think there were some questionable situations. Their goal should at least have been looked at again.”

Alexander Nübel: “We played really well, so it hurts a lot to concede in the final seconds of the game. We deserved to win. Despite everything, we can be proud of ourselves because we produced a good performance here in Leverkusen.”

Chris Führich: “It’s incredibly frustrating. We didn’t make use of the chances we had to get a third goal. It’s just infuriating that they scored right at the end after we didn’t deal with the situation. Today we had a big opportunity to become the first team to beat Leverkusen. Our whole team deserves credit. Everyone pushed themselves to the limit. That’s exactly how we need to perform against Bayern Munich next week.”
