Both sides went on the attack in the early stages at the MHP Arena and the visitors had the first chance in the eighth minute through Morgan Guilavogui, whose long-range effort narrowly missed the target.

At the other end, Enzo Millot (13’ and 18’) missed two opportunities for Stuttgart, who were then punished for a defensive mistake which allowed Johannes Eggestein to give St. Pauli the lead (21’). Sebastian Hoeneß’s men lacked a cutting edge in their attacking play after that, Jeff Chabot passing up another opportunity in the 26^th minute, and so they went in at the break with a one-goal deficit.

Nübel saves penalty

The first incident of the second half came on 54 minutes, when substitute Anrie Chase conceded a penalty, but Alex Nübel saved Eggestein’s spot-kick. VfB then pushed for the equaliser against the defensively compact Hamburg side. Ermedin Demirovic (64’) went close with a low shot after a good pass from Angelo Stiller, before Millot was denied by Nikola Vasilj just four minutes later.

Afolayan strikes post

The hosts were then fortunate not to concede a second as Oladapo Afolayan hit the left post. However, like in the first half, Hoeneß’s side were let down by their failure to take their opportunities against the solid promoted outfit.

21^st minute: After a misplaced pass by Anthony Roualt, Jackson Irvine’s block prevents the VfB defence from clearing a cross. The ball drops to Eggestein, whose shot takes a deflection off Maximilian Mittelstädt on its way past a helpless Nübel.
