Match summary
Sebastian Hoeneß’s team were much quicker out of the blocks than their opponents, playing with tempo and enjoying plenty of possession. However, they were unable to turn their dominance into goals before the interval.
Maximilian Mittelstädt teed up Ermedin Demirovic after five minutes, but the forward was denied by Augsburg goalkeeper Finn Dahmen. Anthony Rouault also spurned an opportunity to give VfB the lead, sending a header narrowly over the crossbar from Chris Führich’s corner in the 19th minute.
The home side worked themselves into the game towards the end of the half, but there was no way through the VfB rearguard as the teams went into half-time on level terms.
Undav on target
After a closely fought opening to the second half, Hoeneß brought on Deniz Undav for Demirovic and Jacob Bruun Larsen for Enzo Millot shortly after the hour mark (61’). The introduction of the two attack-minded players paid off within minutes, with Undav netting the only goal of the game from Angelo Stiller’s clever ball over the top (65’).
The visitors dominated possession after taking the lead, holding on comfortably to secure an important three points away from the MHP Arena.
Up to seventh
The victory in Augsburg lifts Hoeneß’s charges from tenth place up to seventh, keeping them within touching distance of the European places.
