Match summary
The 58,000 fans at the MHP Arena enjoyed a battling, tense encounter from the outset. Wolfsburg started the better of the two teams and had presentable chances for Patrick Wimmer (22’) and Mohammed Amoura (26’) that they were unable to convert.
Openings for Undav and Karazor
VfB grew into the game as the first half progressed and created their first opportunity in the 34th minute when Maximilian Mittelstädt and Chris Führich linked up well on the left. Mittelstädt picked out Deniz Undav with a ball into the centre but his header was well saved by Marius Müller. The next chance arrived ten minutes later when Ramon Hendriks’ brilliant cross found Atakan Karazor, but his close-range header sailed over, leaving the game goalless at the interval.
VfB dominant
Sebastian Hoeneß’s side emerged for the second half full of purpose and pinned their visitors deep inside their own half. Their superiority eventually created two chances, but both Jamie Leweling (52’) and Josha Vagnoman (54’) were denied by Müller.
Woltemade wondergoal
VfB did eventually find a breakthrough, however, when Nick Woltemade scored a sensational solo goal just moments after coming off the bench (72’). The lead was short-lived, though, as Wolfsburg hit back through Tiago Tomas, who scored an unexpected equaliser after applying the finishing touch to a counter-attack (77’).
The away side completed an unlikely comeback in the closing stages after Vagnoman conceded a penalty for a handball inside the box, which Mohammed Amoura converted to put Wolfsburg 2-1 up. VfB subsequently threw everything forward but could not find an equaliser before full time.
Goals
72nd minute: After VfB win possession in midfield, Woltemade drives forward, weaves his way through the Wolfsburg defence and buries a shot into the bottom corner to make it 1-0.
77th minute: VfB’s rearguard loses track of Tomas when trying to deal with Amoura’s cross from the left, and his close-range shot leaves Nübel no chance.
87th minute: Nübel dives low to his left and gets a fingertip on Amoura’s penalty, but is unable to keep it out.
