Match summary
The crowd at the MHP Arena witnessed a match that was hard-fought from the start, with Stuttgart having more of the opening exchanges and Bremen posing a constant threat on the counter-attack. After just 60 seconds, Angelo Stiller set up Ermedin Demirovic, who headed straight into the arms of Michael Zetterer from a good position. At the other end, Oliver Burke was denied by Alexander Nübel.
Stergiou strikes first
Stiller was the provider again in the 19th minute for Leonidas Stergiou, who finished off a nice solo run with the deserved opening goal for Sebastian Hoeneß’s side. After that, Demirovic and Jamie Leweling both missed good opportunities to extend VfB’s lead.
Burke with the equaliser
In the middle of this period of Stuttgart pressure, VfB were hit on the counter. Mitchell Weiser played in Burke, who left Nübel with no chance in a one-on-one and equalised for Bremen on 32 minutes.
Second yellow for Woltemade
In the 65th minute, Woltemade was shown a disputable second yellow card after a tussle with Weiser. With the extra man, Bremen now had more of the play and created a good chance in the 73rd minute, when Felix Agu headed just over the bar.
Late winner
Nübel saved Marco Friedl’s shot in the 84th minute, but the VfB number one was powerless in the 90th minute, when Burke guided the ball in from Leonardo Bittencourt’s pass.
Goals
19th minute: Stiller plays a great ball to Stergiou, who first gets past Romano Schmid and then rounds Werder goalkeeper Zetterer before slotting in the opening goal from 11 metres.
32nd minute: Weiser feeds Burke, who nets an equaliser against the run of play with a shot from 17 metres.
90th minute: Bittencourt plays the ball into Burke in the penalty area and the resurgent Scot’s low shot earns Bremen a 2-1 win.
