VfB head coach Sebastian Hoeneß: “We were the more active team but too inaccurate in some situations to get more out of it. Nevertheless we were the team that looked more like scoring the second – and we conceded the equaliser in that exact phase. In the second half we wanted to attack with more determination and intensity, which I think was clear to see too. The sending-off had a big impact on the match. We were then playing against a good team with a man less. We didn’t look good for the winning goal. Today’s a bad day that leaves a bitter taste.”
Angelo Stiller: “It was a tiring match. A sending-off always makes a difference. I’m not sure you have to give the second yellow in that situation. We were playing a man down from the 65th minute and that was a challenge, particularly defensively. Werder score the second goal just before the end. We have to defend that better, but it’s also more difficult with 10 men.”
Atakan Karazor: “It’s a bit of a downer; we hoped for much more from today. We wanted to come away with a win or at least a point. We didn’t manage to do that today, but we have to immediately look ahead. We were prepared for Werder, they’re good at playing directly, and also directly in behind. That said, we defended it well for the most part and didn’t concede many chances. When it did get a bit hairy now and then, we dealt with it well together. Until the red card it was a good performance by us.”
