It was ultimately a controlled performance, as VfB secured a 3-0 (0-0) win away to FC 08 Homburg in the first round of the DFB-Cup. The goals in a convincing second half display were scored by Christian Gentner (53‘), with a low drive, youngster Berkay Özcan, with his first goal for the club on a counter attack (58’) and ultimately a headed decider from Boris Tashchy, also scoring his first competitive goal for the club (87’).
Personnel
Compared to the recent outing in Düsseldorf, there were three changes made to the VfB Stuttgart starting eleven. New signing Hajime Hosogai, who tore a muscle sinew to his thigh, was replaced by Matthias Zimmermann, with Berkay Özcan getting the nod in attack ahead of Boris Tashchy and Tobias Werner making his staring eleven debut at the expense of Alexandru Maxim.
2nd minute | In the packed Waldstadion in Homburg, VfB immediately take control of proceedings. Emiliano Insua gets a first sight of goal, but fires over from fifteen meters out. Shortly after, Berkay Özcan has an effort blocked away. |
24th minute | The agile Jean Zimmer plays a pass through to Florian Klein, who immediately pulls the trigger, but Jarusch turns the ball over with a good reflex reaction. |
29th minute | Captain Christian Gentner curls the ball against the crossbar from 18 meters out. Once again the frame of the goal rescues the hosts. |
53rd minute | Finally the long overdue breakthrough. Christian Gentner drives a low, well-placed shot home from the edge of the box. |
58th minute | FCH look to open up, but on a quick counter attack, Jean Zimmer feeds a pass through to Berkay Özcan, who makes it 2-0 with his first competitive goal in the VfB colours. |
87th minute | Substitute Boris Tashchy puts the tie to bed! Fellow substitute Philip Heise delivers the cross from the left and finds the head of the striker, who powerfully nods home to make the final score 3-0. |
Florian Klein:
We had good opportunities in the first half. Our plan was to let very little through and we achieved that. It was a deserved win, which should give us some momentum for the upcoming league game in Sandhausen
Summary
That was a tough nut to crack! VfB were entirely superior in every area of the pitch and had a number of good opportunities, but it took until after the break before captain Christian Gentner finally managed to make a breakthrough against the determined and willing hosts from Homburg. Although the opening goal took its time to materialise, VfB convincingly and deservedly claimed their place in the second round of the cup competition. Although there is clearly still come sand in the works, the Cannstatt Boys earned themselves some self-confidence and important match practice ahead of the upcoming tasks in the league.
