VfB Stuttgart’s 2016/2017 DFB-Cup campaign has come to an end. On Tuesday evening, Hannes Wolf’s eleven were eliminated following a 0-2 (0-1) defeat away to Champions League participants Borussia Mönchengladbach. The side in the shirts with the infamous red hoop played well in the first-half, causing their opponents problems on occasion, but were then caught on the break and found themselves trailing. The Cannstatt Boys sought long and hard for a way back into the tie, ultimately conceding a second shortly before the final whistle.
Personnel
Hannes Wolf was forced to alter his side’s attack. The slightly injured Simon Terodde, who didn’t make the squad, was replaced by Boris Tashchy, whilst Florian Klein got the nod ahead of Kevin Großkreutz at right full-back. Hans Nunoo Sarpei was in the VfB squad for the first time on the night, with the 18-year-old from Ghana starting on the substitute’s bench.
19th minute | VfB are very well organised from the outset, attacking their opponents form the half-way line and displaying determined aggression in the challenges. Gladbach are unable to create any real problems for Wolf’s men early on, whilst the ‘Wasenelf’ create the first opening of the match through Berkay Özcan. The shot from the young Turkish international is blocked away. |
30th minute | VfB continue to impress and create their next chance on goal, with a header from Boris Tashchy which narrowly clears the crossbar. |
31st minute | Mönchengladbach make the break-through. Winning possession in their own half, Borussia press forward at pace, exploit the space available to them and duly take the lead through Fabian Johnson. |
49th minute | Gladbach have the opportunity to double their advantage shortly after the re-start, with another well-executed counter attack again causing problems for VfB. André Hahn is unable to get any real power into his shot and Mitch Langerak deals with the situation. |
80th minute | Hans Nunoo Sarpei makes his competitive debut for VfB. The youngster is introduced to replace Boris Tashchy. |
84th minute | Lars Stindl nets the decider. The Borussia captain makes it 2-0 for the hosts. |
Hannes Wolf:
We played very well for the first half-hour. We didn’t allow very much through and had some good moments going forward, but we were unable to make a decisive finish. For the first goal, we were caught out by a high-quality counter-attack. The game then leaned more towards Gladbach. We were unable to get a grip on the pace and deeply played balls by our opponents. On the whole, it was a good display from us, but we would have needed a truly top-performance to progress here. It was a deserved win for Gladbach.
Summed-up
VfB were unable to bring down a Borussia Mönchengladbach side renowned for their home strength. Hannes Wolf’s men began disciplined and aggressively, impressing over long stretches, but a well-executed counter attack by the hosts left the Cannstatt Boys playing catch-up. VfB continued to chase the game in the second-half but were rarely able to cause any real problems for the opposition defence. In the closing phase, Gladbach made effective use of the space available to them to snatch a definitive decider.
